Waterfowl Conservation Chilika Program
The
Wild
Orissa
Waterfowl
Conservation Chilika Program
also took off in 1997 and detailed visits, surveys, etc. to many
areas in the famous brackish water wetland of Orissa were made. In
this the organization partnered with the State Wildlife Wing of
Orissa, and other organizations and more importantly the local
people inhabiting the many villages in and around Chilika. Some
incredible findings came up during such sojourns, the reporting of
the hitherto unreported species like the Oriental Pratincole (Glareola
maldivarum), the
presence of species like the Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla
citreola), Pacific Golden
Plover (Pluvialis fulva), Painted Snipe (Rostratula
benghalensis) etc., during the non-migratory season in Chilika.
The various sectors of Chilika were studied and concentrations and
reasons thereof ascertained and noted. It was during this program
that Wild Orissa
reported for first time laying of 5 eggs by Little Grebe (an
ornithological history record for the species) in Mangalajodi in
2002.
