How You Can Help

'Wild Orissa’ works in close co-ordination with the state wildlife wing as well as the state forest department in the state of Orissa. Its members are few of most widely traveled persons in wildlife areas and natural areas in the country. Immense data and information has been collected by the organization over the years. Yet the organization has been carrying on its mammoth tasks at hand without any much infrastructural support like vehicles, computers, and many others. The lack of funds has sometimes been a bit of constraint but the members have withstood these problems and continued with the same vigour for the last 10 years! The future of ‘Wild Orissa’ once again lies within the ambit of the aims and objectives laid down, as well as on the broad guidelines of functioning decided upon by its members. ‘Wild Orissa’ is aware that the style of wildlife conservation practiced by it is long drawn but at the same time it has ensured some long term gains for wildlife. The organization understands that the time has come where pooling of resources of both governmental and non-governmental requires to be done to save our wildlife. ‘Wild Orissa’ also realizes that it is in our own hands to hand down a better earth to our forthcoming generations.  ‘Wild Orissa’ is confident of similar success in the coming years.

OUR VISION FOR THE STATE OF ORISSA

The state is bestowed with some of the bewildering bio-diversities the conservation of which is the duty of its citizens. But lack of information and knowledge by planners and policy makers could derail natural Orissa. Though an ardent wild lifer would like all places to go back decades, when nature reigned supreme, where the Indian sub-continent was teeming with wildlife of a considerable diversity, and where the iota of unknown ruled supreme, yet we are aware that apart from a very few places left there is not much hope to regain the past. It is in this state of mind that one earnestly hopes that the natural heritage of Orissa is not destroyed and the many remaining places of exquisite diversity are left for posterity. One also hopes that the large herds of elephants are allowed to move from one part of the state to the other as they have been doing for ages. One also hopes that the major faunal species do not face a dark future where different population niches are unable to breed and maintain genetic balance. We hope that the forest fires, which are playing a major role in degradation of forests in Orissa, are controlled so that the beautiful Sal forests could regenerate. We hope that human greed does not overtake the power of regenerative capacity and carrying capacity of our forests, so that a healthy interdependence between man and wildlife and forests exists. We also hope that the little attended to problem of decimation of our small fauna is given a major policy attention, as unknowingly we are or on the verge of losing many species. We also hope that requirement of minor forest produce extraction is not at the cost of a balanced eco-system. We also hope that the relatively unpolluted waters of Orissa remains as such for many more years to come. We hope that dangerous practice of shifting cultivation being practiced in the southern and western parts of the state is discontinued. We hope that some of mega projects which are in the pipeline and which would destroy large tracts of forests are not taken forward and implemented.
